Jan Burke's Summer Reading List
THE RAG MAN
by Pete Hautman
This is what I'm reading now. I have been sent an Advance Readers
Copy of this one and count myself among the luckiest readers on
earth to have an early look at it. I'm in awe of Pete Hautman's
abilities. Stylish and tense. It's due out in October. Highly recommend
it, and sorry you'll have to wait even that long.
FOR THE TIME BEING
by Annie Dillard
This was recommended by a friend. I started this while on tour and
loved what I managed to read of it. I look forward to picking it up
again.
THE ICE HARVEST
by Scott Phillips
Have heard good things about this newcomer.
P IS FOR PERIL
by Sue
Grafton
No need to explain why I am looking forward to Kinsey Milhone's next
adventure.
LUCKY DOG AND OTHER TALES OF MURDER
by Dick Lochte
Love his writing, and this collection is getting raves.
A
DARKNESS MORE THAN NIGHT
by Michael
Connelly
I have the highest regard for his work. Just finished VOID MOON a
little while ago, so I'm almost caught up!
THE
SINGING SANDS
by Josephine Tey
Not long ago I re-read BRAT FARRARR and was reminded of how much I
enjoy reading Josephine Tey's books.
I'll probably also re-read Nicholas Clapp's marvelous
THE
ROAD TO UBAR , the fascinating tale
of his real-life discovery of the lost city (long believed to be mythical)
which is sought in THE SINGING SANDS, a discovery he made nearly fifty
years after Tey's book.
THE
FOUNDLING
by Georgette Heyer
After days of reading research books that are often on grim subject
matters, nothing helps to restore my balance like a Georgette Heyer
novel.
SILENT
JOE
by T.
Jefferson Parker
I've enjoyed every Jeff Parker novel I've ever read.
Two standouts among many books for research are:
SEXUAL
HOMICIDE: Patterns and Motives
by Robert K. Ressler, Ann W. Burgess, and John
E. Douglas
A text on the behavior and psychological traits of serial killers,
based on a long-term FBI study.
THE
CADAVER DOG HANDBOOK: Forensic Training and Tactics for the Recovery
of Human Remains
by Andrew Rebmann, Ed David, and Marci Sorg
Rebmann is a highly regarded cadaver dog trainer and pioneer in
the field, Dr. Ed David has been a medical examiner and is an expert
cadaver dog handler, and Marci Sorg is a leading forensic anthropologist.
This promises to be an excellent resource book.
