THE SCARLET PROFESSOR: Newton Arvin --- A Literary
Life Shattered by Scandal
by Barry Werth
Just the thought of being young, gifted and queer
in the fifties makes me want to shudder, pull the
blinds down and turn off all the lights. Barry Werth
tells the private horrors of closeted Smith College
Professor Newton Arvin, who was involved in what now
reads as a quaint pornographic “scandal.” Although
back then, black and white pin-ups of partially clothed
muscle men cost Arvin his job and reputation. Lovers
with that famously annoying (but oh so talented) southern
feygelah Truman Copote, Profesor Arwin’s story
is too close to home for this Brandeis professor.
FAITHLESS: Tales of Transgression
by
Joyce Carol Oates
There is nothing finer than a candle-lit meal in an old Prague castle
and a Joyce Carol Oates razor-sharp short story. Truly, each story
is packed with drama --- from the mundane to the sublime. If you love
good wine, then settle in for the night with a glass of Bordeaux and
this superb collection of terrifyingly real short stories.
REMEMBER ME TO HARLEM: The Letters of Langston Hughes and Carl
Van Vechten, 1925-1964
Edited by Emily Bernard
Good letter writing is like good sex --- satisfying
and intense; intimate and revealing. So are the letters between Harlem
Renaissance writer Langston Hughes and white literary critic, author
and sometimes disgustingly racist Carl Van Vechten. A rare look into
the imaginations and peregrinations of two fundamentally, creative
homo erotically inclined human beings.
THE STUFF OF DREAMS: Behind the Scenes of An American Community
Theater
by Leah Hager Cohen
Ever wanted to be the star of the show? (I did!) Go behind the scenes
of community theater with author Leah Hager Cohen as she chronicles
the high dramas and small jealousies of the local high-strung but
thoroughly dedicated actors and actresses in a Boston troupe. Her
prose is simply elegant as she illuminates the passion of performing.
DAYS OF AWE
by Achy Obejas
Jewish, Cubana and a lover of women --- DAYS OF AWE takes this Jewish-American
high femme reader on a postmodern journey of exile, eros, and return
as Alejandra San Jose discovers her father’s hidden Jewish identity
and her own growing attraction to the female gender. Yes, this is
another self-discovery novel --- but oh WHAT A STORY IT IS!
