Homer Hickam’s Summer Reading List:
SHARPE’S TRAFALGAR: Richard Sharpe and the Battle
of Trafalgar, 21 October 1805
by Bernard Cornwell
Since I am a big fan of both Patrick O'Brian (MASTER
AND COMMANDER) and Mr. Cornwell, I am looking forward
to reading about Richard Sharpe, a land-lubber if
there ever was one, afloat with Nelson during this
famous battle. Nobody in modern fiction can stitch
a battle together quite like Bernard Cornwell so I'm
rubbing my hands in anticipation!
DINOSAUR LIVES: Unearthing an Evolutionary Saga
by John R. (Jack) Horner
I'm heading out to Montana this summer to look for dinosaurs with
this famous paleontologist and am preparing myself by --- what else?
--- reading one of his books. This will be my third trip into the
field with the Horner team.
HAVANA BAY
by Martin Cruz Smith
Mr. Smith's novels are always absorbing and this
one is set in an interesting locale, modern-day Cuba. I'll take this
one on the dinosaur hunt.
DOG COMPANY SIX
by Edwin Howard Simmons
I've had this one in my library for awhile and just haven't gotten
to it. It's published by my first publisher (and Tom Clancy's), the
Naval Institute Press. I've only heard good things about this Korean
War novel.
THE INTRUDERS
by Stephen Coonts
Mr. Coonts is a fellow West Virginian but I'd read his stuff, anyway.
He writes good, taut, military fiction that never fails to entertain.
TAPS
by Willie Morris
This was the last book written by Mr. Morris before his untimely death.
I loved MY DOG SKIP and MY CAT SPIT. I think I'm going to like this
one, too.
THE SAND PEBBLES
by Richard McKenna
I read this one some years back and loved it. It's time to read it
again. It's a story of an American gunboat in the backwaters of China
during the rise of Chinese nationalism during the 1920's. It was turned
into a great Steve McQueen movie, too.
THE GOLD COAST
by Nelson DeMille
I enjoy all of Mr. DeMille's books. He really knows how to spin a
yarn.
