Jan Karon’s Summer Reading List
JIM THE BOY
by Tony Earley
If you’d like something moving, wise, and tender beyond telling,
then do buy JIM THE BOY. Buy it for yourself and then, if you can
bear to let it go, pass it on. It’s also wonderful for younger readers.
It will show them what love is, it will show them what family is,
it will show them what hope is. It’s my favorite read in ages.
For years, I’ve been keen on survival literature.
Two of my top five picks:
THE
LONG WALK: The True Story of a Trek to Freedom
by Slavomir Rawicz
WE DIE ALONE: A WWII Epic of Escape and Endurance
by David Howarth
Don’t miss these thoroughly outstanding chronicles
of survival against all—and I do mean all—odds.
Two lovely books which are oddly sympathetic
in subject material are GIRL
IN HYACINTH BLUE by Susan
Vreeland and GIRL
WITH A PEARL EARRING by Tracy Chevalier. Warmly
recommended.
