I have been eagerly awaiting McCracken's newest novel about a pair
of Vaudeville buddies. I was crazy for her novel THE
GIANTS HOUSE, which made me cry uncontrollably. That's a good
thing.
THE YAKOTA OFFICERS CLUB
by Sarah Bird
Sarah has written a number of funny novels, but this
new one, about a young girl and her Air Force family,
is said to have a well-done, more serious side too.
I enjoyed her book of a few years ago, THE MOMMY'S
CLUB.
THE ABSENCE OF NECTAR

This one isn't out till September, but where I
live, that's still summertime. This is a coming of age novel set in
East Texas, with a big dollop of suspense thrown in. Kathy wrote the
wonderful THE
HOUSE OF GENTLE MEN, a lyrical and provocative novel like
nothing else you've ever read.
THE HALLELUJIAH SIDE
by Rhoda Huffey
I've started reading this one, a comical and strange story of a 1950s
Pentecostal family living in Iowa. It's compelling and quite funny
and has moments of lush description amidst the oddity of the story.
WHEN KAMBIA ELAINE FLEW IN FROM NEPTUNE
by Aurelia Williams
I heard the author read an excerpt from this novel recently. What
she read was very funny, but I gather this young adult novel about
a12-year-old African American girl growing up in Houston has moments
of great intensity too.
THE
NAKED CHEF
by Jamie Oliver
I've enjoyed watching this young Brit chef on the Food Network, and
this cookbook has lovely photos of both the food and the handsome
chef himself. The spicy introductions to each section, written by
Oliver, convey his joy in food and in feeding his lucky friends.
