Joyce Sweeney's Summer Reading List
ON THE FRINGE
Edited by Donald R. Gallo
This short story collection includes some of my favorite YA authors
and deals with a topic we all love --- being an outsider.
BREATHING UNDERWATER
by Alex Flinn
Even though the author is female, she has great insight into the young
male mind, my favorite territory. This is the first book I've seen
on dating violence written from the male point of view.
LOCKED INSIDE
by Nancy Werlin
Nancy is one of my favorite authors of teen thrillers,
and this was an Edgar Award finalist.
THE BODY OF CHRISTOPHER CREED
by Carol Plum-Ucci
Also an Edgar finalist and looks like a good mystery and a good narrator's
voice.
COUNTERFEIT SON
by Elaine Marie Alphin
Another female author who does the male point of view well, and
this book won the Edgar this year.
MONSTER
by Walter
Dean Myers
This is the book every librarian and teacher I've met this year has
told me I've got to read.
