AOTW: What one quality above all others makes a continuing character successful?
Ridley Pearson: Believability. Gone are the days of James Bond --- at least for me. I want to see a real character with real problems. I prefer the series where the character is allowed to grow and meet his/her fears.
Nevada Barr: For my money a continuing character has to change yet stay the same. She must grow or she becomes boring, yet stay true to the essence of her personality that charms, inspires, and attracts. A tricky balance.
Ian Rankin: I think the reader has to feel that they are gaining more understanding of the central character with each new book, so the main character must be capable of change; they must have secrets and depths which can be explored as the series progresses.
George Pelecanos: If the character changes, experiences profound change, or grows in each book, then the writer is at least attempting to do something worthwhile. Anything else is just product.
Robert B. Parker: People need to like him, or her.
Carolyn Hart: Honesty
