Loretta Barrett
Bio
Loretta Barrett is president of Loretta Barrett Books, Inc. in New York, a literary
agency she founded in 1990. Formerly she was Editor-in-Chief of Anchor Books and Vice
President and Executive Editor at Doubleday & Co. At Doubleday she published, among
others, social critic Barbara Ehrenreich, former First Lady Betty Ford, Steven Levine,
artist Judy Chicago, entertainer Betty White, Esther and Richard Shapiro, creators of
Dynasty, historian Ann Douglas, as well as such novelists as Paul West and Chinua Achebe.
Ms. Barretts list of clients includes such leaders in their fields as Ray Kurzweil,
author of THE AGE OF SPIRITUAL MACHINES (Viking Penguin) and winner of the Presidential
Technology Award of 1999 as well as the Lemelson-MIT Prize of 2001; Ann Douglas, one of
the foremost American historians of her generation and author of TERRIBLE HONESTY,
(Farrar, Straus & Giroux); Wayne Muller, a columnist for Fortune psychologist,
and spiritual writer, author of SABBATH (Bantam); and Max Bazerman of Harvard Business
School, author of SMART MONEY DECISIONS (John Wiley & Sons). Nonfiction authors also
include George Weigel, author of the definitive biography of John Paul II, WITNESS TO HOPE
(HarperCollins); Letitia Baldrige, the doyenne of etiquette whose memoir IN THE ROOM will
be published by Viking in Fall 2001; and Michael Anderson, editor of The New York Times
Book Review and author of the forthcoming I WANT TO WRITE: THE LIFE AND TIMES OF
LORRAINE HANSBERRY (HarperCollins).
The novelists Ms. Barrett represents include Laura Van Wormer, author of several best
sellers including EXPOSE (Mira) and RIVERSIDE DRIVE (Doubleday/Mira); Mariah Stewart,
author of a number of novels published by Pocket Books including BROWN-EYED GIRL and the
newly published VOICES CARRY; Jack Kelly, author of the neo-noir thriller LINE OF SIGHT
(Hyperion); and M.J. Rose, author of several novels, including the just-published IN
FIDELITY (Pocket Books), and the intensely discussed LIP SERVICE (Pocket Books), the first
ever novel originally published on the internet to become a book club selection for the
Doubleday Direct and Literary Guild book clubs prior to its hardcover publication, and
co-author with Angela Adair-Hoy of the definitive guide HOW TO PUBLISH AND PROMOTE ONLINE
(St. Martins Press).
Ms. Barrett serves on the national boards of Reading Is Fundamental, the Nathaniel Wharton
Fund, and The Grandparenting Foundation, and is a member of the University of
Pennsylvanias Trustees Council of Penn Women and Womens Media Group of New
York. She is a member of the Association of Author Representatives.
