Bio

Maria Carvainis was born in Brisbane, Australia and emigrated with her family to the United States when she was six and half years old. She has resided in New York City ever since and attended City College of New York, where she received a Bachelor of Arts Degree with a major in History and was the recipient of a New York State Merit Scholarship. Her personal interests include reading literary fiction, biographies, mysteries, gardening, gourmet cooking, wine appreciation and travel. She is a Conservator of The New York Public Library, member of Literacy Partners, President of the Board of Directors of The Bidwell House Museum and devotee of vintage, English cars, especially Bentleys.

Maria Carvainis established Maria Carvainis Agency, Inc. in 1977, after spending more than ten years in the publishing industry as an editor and then senior editor with Macmillan Publishing, Basic Books, Avon Books and Crown Publishers. The agency represents both fiction and nonfiction with special interest in general fiction/mainstream, literary fiction, mystery and suspense, thrillers, historicals, contemporary women's fiction, biography and memoirs, business, finance, psychology, health and self-help, and popular science.

Maria Carvainis views the author's editorial needs and career development as integral components of the literary agent's role, in addition to the negotiation of intricate contracts. Some sixty plus authors are represented by the agency under the aegis of Maria Carvainis, President, and Frances Kuffel, who recently joined the company as Executive Vice President after working for twelve years at another highly respected New York literary agency. Ms. Carvainis served as a Board Member and Treasurer of the Association of Authors Representatives and past Chair of the AAR's Contracts Committee and currently serves on the AAR's Royalty Committee and liaison for AAR's sponsorship of The Rights Center at BOOKEXPO. She is also a member of the Writers Guild of America, Authors Guild, American Booksellers Association, Mystery Writers of America and Romance Writers of America. Ms. Carvainis has maintained active contacts, for over 30 years, with editors, publishers and other executives in the New York and international publishing industry, and in film and television. She is frequently invited to participate in writers' conferences.
