Breast Cancer Awareness Author Roundtable

"You have breast cancer." Four words that every woman dreads hearing. We gathered four authors --- Laney Katz Becker, Barbara Delinsky, Jennie Nash and Jane Plant --- who are also breast cancer survivors to talk about why they wrote their books and what they wish every woman knew about breast cancer.

Their answers may help you or someone you know. Each of these books is a must-read for both those undergoing treatment, as well as their family and friends.

Laney Katz Becker

Laney Katz Becker has written articles for more than fifty publications including Self, American Health, Seventeen and First For Women. She is a breast cancer survivor and lives with her husband and two children in Westchester County, New York. Dear Stranger, Dearest Friend is her first novel.

Barbara Delinsky

Barbara Delinsky was born and raised in suburban Boston. After graduating from Newton High School, she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology at Tufts University and a Master of Arts degree in Sociology at Boston College.

Delinsky became a writer by fluke. Her twins were four when, by chance, she happened on a newspaper article profiling three female writers. Intrigued, she spent three months researching, plotting, and writing her own book --- and it sold. That was in 1980. Since then, she has written and published over sixty-five novels. An advocate for contemporary women's issues, Delinsky has appeared on panels and television and radio shows across the country, as well as before library, civic, and school groups. She has participated in many on-line chats. Four of her books have been optioned as television movies. More than twenty-eight million copies of her books are in print worldwide, in English and over twenty-five foreign languages. She and her husband, a lawyer, have three grown sons, and two daughters-in-law. They divide their time between their suburban Boston home and a lake house in New Hampshire.

Jennie Nash

Jennie Nash first began writing essays as a student at Wellesley College, where she wrote a column "On and Off Campus" for the alumni magazine. As she worked toward a degree in English, she developed a series of essays about her friendship with her roommate, which she later turned into an honors thesis entitled "Two Women in Particular." Nash graduated cum laude from Wellesley in 1986.

After graduation, Nash moved to New York City, where she worked as an editorial assistant at Ballantine Books and an assistant editor at New York Woman magazine. She began her freelance writing career while working on these editorial staffs. Her personal essays and articles have appeared in dozens of national publications including The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, Shape, Glamour, Mademoiselle, GQ, US, Home, Working Woman, New York Woman, and Reader's Digest. In addition, her marketing and advertising copy has been used on products by clients such as Mattel, Fischer-Price and Knowledge Avenue.

In 1992, Nash's collection of essays, Altered Status: Surviving the Engagement, was published by Crown. It was excerpted in Cosmopolitan magazine.

Nash's latest book, The Victoria Secret's Catalog Never Stops Coming and Other Lessons I Learned from Breast Cancer (Scribner, 2001) is the story of how the illness made her "a wise old woman at the age of 36." Ford Motor Company purchased 110,000 copies of the book to use as giveaways in their national education outreach campaign for which Nash waived her royalties. Ford is also touring her to major cities to lecture and sign books during October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The Victoria's Secret Catalog Never Stops Coming is a Lifetime TV Bookshelf Pick for October 2001. It is currently featured in prominent ads in six major Hearst women's magazines. Nash was featured on an ABC produced for the Los Angeles Revlon Run/Walk in May 2001. She was also the keynote speaker at the Baylor University Hospital Fundraiser in Dallas, Texas in October 2001.

Nash will co-teach a month-long class on breast cancer for WebMD University in October 2001. She will be signing books at major bookstore outlets around the country. Nash will appear on The Rosie O'Donnell Show on October 26, 2001.

Nash lives with her husband and their two little girls in Los Angeles, California.
