AOTW: In general, do you think the medical community is well-informed on breast cancer?
Dr. Jane Plant: It varies a lot but I think the medical community has improved their knowledge and approach greatly over the last decade. There are an increasing number who acknowledge diet is important and many patients tell me their oncologists are recommending them to read my book.
Laney Katz Becker: In general, yes. Although I think the kind of breast exam most gyn's give is not nearly thorough enough. The three minute grope just doesn't do the trick, you know? Also, there are still too many Dr. God's out there who just want women to do what they're told. There are also doctors who prefer the easy route. For instance, rather than coordinating a woman's reconstruction with her mastectomy, they'll remove a woman's breast and tell her to worry about the reconstruction later. I just talked to a woman who was absolutely thrilled when I told her about the TRAM option. "You mean I'll never even have to see myself without a breast?" she asked. Shame on that doctor for not at least presenting her with the choice!
Jennie Nash: We live at an incredible time, in terms of treatment. We have a lot of tools at our disposal to fight this disease --- among them the caring men and women who work to help us heal. They are not perfect. Our tools are not perfect. But we're all doing the best we can. If anyone feels their doctor is not well informed, they should find another doctor --- now!
Barbara Delinsky: Yes.
