Darren Shan

I was born in London in 1972, directly opposite Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament. I lived in London until the age of 6, and started school aged 3 (I was such a wild child, no pre-school facility would have me!!). I came from a largely working class Irish family, though my mother was a primary school teacher. In London I lived in a block of council-owned apartments.

I loved the switch to Ireland: we moved into my great-grandfather's cottage (he lived with us until his death 10 years later), out in the countryside, and I relished the freedom and dark, spooky nights (the countryside's far eerier than the city!). Irish TV was very primitive in those days (2 channels, which only aired for less than twelve hours each day!), so I had to read lots of books to pass the time. I read every sort I could find, but I especially liked horror stories.

I was always interested in horror, both books and movies, and loved giving myself nightmares. Many of the books I write now are rooted in delightfully chilling childhood scare sessions, when I'd keep myself awake at night, imagining horrible scenarios in which vampires and other assorted creatures would surround my little cottage and lay siege!

I've published 2 books for adults, 3 for children — with plenty more to come! I live in Ireland , and have been fascinated with vampires since I was six years old. I write full-time, and I still love giving myself nightmares.....

Cirque Du Freak is his first children's novel. Book 2 of the Darren Shan saga, The Vampire's Assistant, was published in September.

R.L. Stine

Robert Lawrence Stine began his writing career when he was nine years old and today he has achieved the position of the best selling children's author in history. Stine, born in Columbus, Ohio, began writing short stories, joke books, and comic books for his friends, and he has devoted his adult life to getting kids to enjoy reading and involving them in the fun and creativity of writing. In the early 1990's, Stine was catapulted to fame when he penned the unprecedented best-selling Goosebumps series, which sold more than 220 million copies and was instrumental in bringing boys back to reading. His other major series, Fear Street has over 80 million copies sold, and in 1999, Stine's volume of stories, Nightmare Hour was on The New York Times bestseller list. Most recently, R.L. Stine has teamed up with HarperCollins Publishers to launch his brand-new series, The Nightmare Room.

The Nightmare Room is R.L. Stine's first new series in eight years. Nothing is more important to both Stine and Parachute than helping kids read better -- and to improve their writing skills. Joan Waricha, Parachute's CEO, comments: "Mr. Stine's energy and enthusiasm for working with kids never wanes. We hope that teachers will enjoy using The Nightmare Room books together with the innovative ideas contained in the writing kit to help their students become proficient writers."

There he was head writer on the Nickelodeon blockbuster Eureka's Castle, and for ten years was editor-in-chief of Bananas, a humor magazine for children. During this time, Stine wrote dozens of joke books and humor books for children, under the name Jovial Bob Stine.

In 1986, Stine broke away from humor and wrote Blind Date, his first scary novel for teenagers, which immediately became a best seller. "I was completely surprised," recalls Stine. "I realized I'd struck a chord with kids. They liked my scary books!" Then in 1989, Stine teamed with Parachute Press to create Fear Street, the first horror series for teens. The enormous success of Fear Street led to three spin-off series. But it was 1992 that saw the launch of a phenomenon in publishing that has yet to be duplicated -- Goosebumps, A scary but funny series for kids ages eight to twelve, Goosebumps was an instant hit, Stine was named the #1 best selling author in America by USA Today for three straight years, and Goosebumps was certified the biggest selling children's book series in the Guinness Book of World Records, 2000 and 2001. The franchise also expanded into television, with the #1-ranked Goosebumps television show on the Fox Kids' Network for four years, and numerous consumer products, including a theme-park attraction at MGM-Disney.

Stine's first hardcover collection of terrifying tales for kids, Nightmare Hour, was published in October 1999, featuring illustrations by celebrated artists including Bernie Wrightson and Ed Koren. The book received a prestigious Children's Choices award and was named kids' favorite in Disney Adventures' first annual Kids' Choice Awards as Best Horror/Mystery Book. Issued in paperback in 2000, Nightmare Hour spent weeks on The New York Times bestseller list. A follow-up, The Haunting Hour, will be published for Halloween 2001.
