Black History Month Author Roundtable

10. AOTW: What are you currently working on?

Benilde Little: A novella for teen-aged girls and another novel that I'm not willing to talk about.

Victor LaValle: I'm working on a novel that I've been describing as the life of Peggy Guggenheim meets The Night of the Living Dead. It's basically about a woman who discovers, in her forties, her genius.

Stanice Anderson: A play that is a 4-woman collaborative effort that includes my publishing coach, Patrice Gaines, depicting our lives and journeys to discover our "callings."

Olympia Vernon: Book five. I've had to pause, due to book two coming out of the box soon on the publishing market.

Marcus Major: A novel about a family that is experiencing a trying time. It's a sequel to my first book.

Harriette Cole: I am currently putting the finishing touches on a family book that is coming out in September. It's called Coming Together: Celebrations for African American Families (Jump at the Sun/Hyperion). I collaborated on this book with photographer John Pinderhughes.

Next year the third edition of Jumping the Broom will be published. And a book specifically about the sacred ceremony: Vows (Simon and Schuster) will be published simultaneously.

As I mentioned earlier, I write a thrice-weekly advice column, titled "Sense & Sensitivity" that is available online via ChicagoTribune.com.

Stephanie Perry Moore: My second adult novel for Warner. The main character is a secret service agent who tries to climb the ladder of success in every area of her life. But until she finds a right relationship, nothing goes right.

Nikki Giovanni: I am currently enjoying the book I have just completed: Quilting the Black-Eyed Pea.

Y. Blak Moore: Got one finished called Slipping Thru The Cracks and I'm working on The Apostles. It's gonna be crazy hot.

Jenoyne Adams: I am working on my third novel and I am sooo excited.

Nalo Hopkinson: I have just finished my novel Griffonne and handed it in to my publisher. It's an historical piece that links pre-revolutionary Haiti with a black entertainer who used to live in 19th Century France, and an Egyptian prostitute in 4th Century Alexandria. It will appear in November 2003 from Warner Books. I have a number of short stories in the works, and I'm drafting proposals for two new novels. In spring 2003, Warner Aspect will release an anthology of other people's short fiction which I edited. It's called Mojo: Conjure Stories.

Ray Shannon: A serio-comic ensemble crime novel in the same vein as my latest book, Man Eater.
